Shot in the leg....

so ive been hearing a bunch of debate lately about how the redskin's player got shot in the leg and died...and therefore the ambulance must not of have showed up fast enough cause come on folks, who the hell dies of a shot to the leg??

Physiology 101 (how your body is put together) There is an enormous pair of blood vessels running down the inside of both your legs.  Think about it...your leg is a really really large hunk of meat (even you skinny types).  It needs a large quantity of blood to keep it going.  You also tend to do lots of stuff with your legs, again, necessitating lots of blood.  So this means that in order for the body to deliver that amount of blood...it must take a pretty big tube to get it there.  Have you heard of the femoral artery or femoral vein?  They are some of the largest vessels in the body outside of the ones directly leading to your heart.  However your body has done a pretty good job of protecting these vessels under normal circumstances.  Next time you're sitting about naked plop yourself down indian style.  Feel that thick band of tissue on the inside of your thigh, right up by your groin?  Its probably kinda sensitive if you push hard.  Thats where those vessels are hiding along with the sciatic nerve.  They run down the inside of the leg near the bone, protected underneath large masses of muscle.

The problem is that bullets really dont care about how much muscle is standing in the way.  They are pretty good at going straight through it, known for it in fact.  So if you (or anyone, large football players included, get shot in the leg and that bullet's path happens to tear through either or both of those vessels, you're basically hosed.  You can bleed out (all your blood gone) with in a matter of minutes and its very unlikely that you will be able to stop the bleeding even with large amounts of direct pressure... the hose is just too large and a hole in it lets all the water drain out really really fast.

so next time you see a movie where the guy gets shot in the inside of the thigh and just gets up and walks away....think again..its much more likely that the hero would have died and quickly from that wound.  Not real romantic tho...dead from being shot in the leg.

So i have no idea if the ambulance was quick or slow or whatever, the problem is that it wouldnt have mattered.  Unless he got shot in an actual operating room with staff standing by ready to go into immediate surgery, chances are that he would have died no matter how hard they tried to save him.
